JFS COVID-19 Updates

JFS Dallas is ever mindful of our mission to do everything we can to remain available as a resource for those in need, in a safe and effective way.
Amid growing concerns of COVID-19 virus, we have made the difficult decision to cease operations out of our physical locations and will remain closed until we evaluate that it is safe to reopen.
This decision was made considering the safety of our staff, clients and volunteers, and is based on guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the City of Dallas.
Please make note of the service delivery changes until further notice below.

Direct Client Services

  • Intake: For individuals needing resources, support, or information, we ask that you leave a message on our intake line, 972-437-9950 x340, and a JFS Staff member will return your call.  Calls made after 4pm will be returned the next day.

  • Food Pantry: We will not be distributing food while our building is closed. However, Network of Community Ministries will serve all JFS Food Pantry clients during our closure, regardless of zip code. If you are in need of food assistance please call (972) 234-8880 to make an appointment and identify yourself as a JFS Food Pantry client. They operate by appointment only. No walk-ins.

  • Kosher Home Delivered Meals: Meal distribution is modified for deliveries in partnership with the JCC. More information will be sent to those we serve.

  • Career and Financial Services: Coaches have reached out to their individual clients and are continuing services virtually. To download a CFS job search powerpoint webinar click here: https://bit.ly/2wYuMEb

  • Older Adult Services: Clinicians have reached out to their individual clients and are continuing services utilizing telephone visits.

  • Services to our Schools: Our school-based services will follow recommendations for continued remote services and are maintaining regular communication with the schools.

  • PLAN Clubhouse: The PLAN @ 1121 Rock Clubhouse remains closed. PLAN will conduct a daily conference call for members at 1:15pm everyday for a community check in.

  • Resale Shop: The Resale Shop remains closed. We have also suspended donation acceptance at all locations.

Volunteer Activities

  • Regular Volunteers: Unless otherwise notified, all volunteer activities have been cancelled until further notice. These activities will commence when the JFS facilities re-open.
  • Passover Packages: Unfortunately, because these packages are delivered to the homes of those identified as “high risk“, we have cancelled packing and delivery of these packages, currently scheduled for April 2 and April 5. This decision was not made lightly as we know how important Seder items are to our community over Passover.
  • New Volunteers: We are not on boarding new volunteers at this time. If you’d like to volunteer with JFS in the future, please create an account on our volunteer site at JFSDallas.VolunteerHub.com and we will contact you when we’ve reinstated our on boarding process.

How you can help JFS Dallas

  • We are not currently accepting any physical donations of food or items for our Resale Shop. However, if you would like to support our continued work, your financial contribution is greatly appreciated and will help support our staff and modified operations during this time.   • Support us by participating in our Someone to Lean on Social Media Campaign. You can change your temporary profile picture, upload graphics on Facebook, and spreading the word about services available to the general community.

In addition to the changes we have made to our client facing services, we have made the decision to cancel all agency meetings and events through Monday, April 20.

Mental Health Resources

  • The Texas Department of Health and Human Services has extensive resources available for mental health support, including those facing a mental health crisis.
  • The Metrocare Coronavirus Support Line is available during our normal business hours Monday through Friday for those Dallas County residents experiencing high anxiety or depression during these turbulent times. Metrocare’s professionals will assist individuals in accessing our mental health services and provide referrals for other services that may be needed. The Metrocare Coronavirus Support Line for Dallas County is 214-743-1215.

Unemployment and Workers’ Comp

  • Anyone who has lost their job due to coronavirus or has had to take time off to self-quarantine or care for a sick relative (and does not get paid sick time from work) may apply for UNEMPLOYMENT insurance. Info on that here.
  • Anyone whose job has brought them into direct contact with someone with coronavirus (for instance, a first responder or a health care worker) and has become ill or are required to quarantine can file for WORKERS’ COMP. File for that here.
  • If you or a friend or family member are out of work, Texas’ Employment Security Department provides support services as well.

Financial Assistance

  • The IRS has deferred the federal tax filing deadline to July 15th. Find more information on Coronavirus tax relief here.
  • The U.S. Department of Treasury has a list of financial resources for consumers.
  • Residents can call 211 and give their zip code for a list of local financial and in-kind resources available in their area.
  • Texans who believe they have encountered price gouging or disaster scams should call the Office of the Attorney General’s toll-free complaint line at (800) 621-0508 or file a complaint online. For additional information on disaster scams, please visit our disaster scams website.

Food Assistance and Donation

  • Here is also a list of open food pantries inclusive of hours.
  • North Texas Food Bank has shifted to box distribution model with partner agencies. Food4Kids and School Pantry programs remain fully functional, and they are partnering with the City to deliver snack/hydration kits to the homeless.
  • Dallas County Health and Human Services Older Adult Services Program is currently providing meals delivered to homebound seniors. There is a drive-thru for hot meal pick-up service set up at each senior center location. Seniors needing these resources can call 214-819-1860 to enroll.
  • Meals will be provided to all children at most district middle and high schools and will be distributed twice a week, on Monday and Thursday between 10 AM and 1 PM. On Monday you will receive Breakfast, Lunch, and Supper for Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Thursday will have Breakfast, Lunch, and Supper for the rest of the week, including Saturday. Paid Sick Leave information: City of Dallas employers must provide employees with paid sick leave to care for themselves or a family member. An employee may use paid sick leave for the employee’s or their family member’s illness, injury, healthcare, and reasons related to domestic abuse, sexual assault, or stalking.
