Dear JFS Family,
When reflecting on the events that unfolded over the last year, I am reminded of a quote by Mr. Rogers, “When I was a child and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.” If you are looking for a bright spot, look no further than the staff at Jewish Family Service. I am so proud of all that they have and continue to do for the Greater Dallas community.
We have seen them rise to new challenges with grace, dedication, and hard work. I’m also proud of how the JFS Board of Directors have pivoted during this time too. I have been on the board for over 10 years, and in preparation for the presidency for 2 years as President-Elect, but I never could have imagined what the start to my presidency would bring.
We went from regularly spending time at the Edna Zale building to fully virtual experiences for our board. Whether it was a virtual Hanukkah candle lighting, Lunch and Learns about volunteer opportunities or financial reporting, or countless Committee meetings while battling Zoom fatigue, we kept the agency initiatives moving forward and our tight-knit community connected to JFS in meaningful ways.
There is no denying that the pandemic and social landscape has been hard for each of us in our own ways, but I choose to focus on how our mission is meeting this moment now more than ever. From one crisis to the next, it is humbling to be surrounded by donors, volunteers, staff members, all asking themselves, “What can I do personally to make a difference today?” Thank you for your ongoing support of this agency we know and love. While I really look forward to more regular times ahead for both our Board and the agency, until that time comes, I know JFS will continue to be an open door to all in need. I hope you all continue to be well and stay safe in 2021.
