As a career coach, I provide personalized support to help clients with job searches and guide them through employment transitions. By discussing their individual career goals, I help them become better prepared to find the job that aligns with their skills and desires.

One of the key tools I use is the SMART goals framework—a structured, methodical approach to setting effective and achievable goals.

SMART stands for:
Specific-Measurable-Attainable-Realistic-Time-bound.

Setting SMART goals not only enhances their job search strategy, but also helps them stay focused and increase their chances of success. This approach allows them to break down large tasks into manageable steps, track their progress, and stay motivated with clear timelines. For example:

S“= Specific – your goal should be clear and well-defined so, instead of “I want to find a job”, try this: “I want to find a full-time marketing role at a mid-sized company in Dallas.”

M” = Measurable – you need to track your progress. “I will apply to 10 targeted job postings per week.”

A” = Attainable – Set realistic goals considering your current situation. “I will update my LinkedIn profile and my resume by the end of next week.”

R” = Realistic – Ensure your goals align with your long-term career objectives. “I will focus on roles that align with my background in marketing.”

T” = Time-bound – Set deadlines to stay accountable. “I will secure at least one job interview within the next 30 days.”

Whether you are entering the workforce, changing careers, or simply seeking a better fit, SMART goals can be a powerful tool to guide you through your journey.
