On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, staff at Jewish Family Service of Dallas stepped outside their everyday roles to volunteer within the organization, spending the day supporting programs that serve our community.
Throughout the day, staff members volunteered in the Food Pantry by stocking shelves and assisting clients as they shopped for groceries. Others spent time at the PLAN Clubhouse, connecting with members, while additional team members helped deliver Kosher Home Delivered Meals to older adults throughout the community. Each experience offered a hands-on opportunity to see how JFS Dallas services support individuals and families in real and meaningful ways.
While every role at JFS Dallas contributes to our mission, many staff do not always have the opportunity to see the direct, day-to-day impact of our services or participate in work outside their own service area. MLK Day provides a unique opportunity for staff to step away from their usual responsibilities, gain new perspective, and experience the mission from a different vantage point.
That experience was especially meaningful for Brenda, JFS Dallas’ Chief Financial Officer, who volunteered in the Food Pantry alongside her sons and nephew. Reflecting on the day, she shared:
“Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. reminded us that ‘Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve.’ [Volunteering at JFS Dallas] reinforced that everyone has something valuable to contribute, and sometimes the most powerful impact comes from showing up and choosing kindness.”
Career & Financial Coach Ronda Robinson, who also volunteered in the Food Pantry, reflected on what it meant to her regular:
“For me, volunteering at the Jewish Family Service of Dallas food pantry on MLK Day was a powerful pause from my usual workday as a Career & Financial Coach. Stepping out of my coaching role to serve food pantry clients face-to-face offered a very different kind of connection—one that underscored how impactful presence, compassion, and community truly are.”
Together, these experiences reflect the purpose of Martin Luther King Jr. Day and the values that guide JFS Dallas year-round. By creating opportunities for staff to volunteer across programs, it strengthens understanding, connection, and shared commitment to the people we serve.
We are grateful to our staff for choosing to spend the day in service and for the care they always bring to our community.
