How to Help Families in Dallas During the Government Shutdown

As the federal government shutdown continues into its record length, families across Dallas are feeling the impact. With cuts to SNAP and WIC benefits and food prices still rising, many households are struggling to keep food on the table.

At Jewish Family Service of Greater Dallas, our Food Pantry continues to serve hundreds of clients each week—families, seniors, and individuals who rely on this essential resource to feed themselves and their loved ones. In just the first week of November, we’ve already seen a sharp increase in first time clients looking to fill that gap.

It’s not only those who typically turn to us for help. Furloughed federal employees and others affected by the shutdown are also seeking temporary food assistance and other JFS Dallas services.

Your generosity can make an immediate difference. Here are three meaningful ways to help families find comfort, dignity, and hope during this difficult time.

1. Donate

A financial contribution allows us to act quickly where the need is greatest. We can stretch your dollars further by purchasing fresh produce, dairy, and pantry staples in bulk, ensuring every family receives balanced, nourishing meals.

Your monetary gift helps fill inventory gaps and sustain our expanded food distribution as more neighbors turn to JFS Dallas for support.

2. Host a Food Drive

Community-organized food drives are one of the most powerful ways to keep our shelves stocked.

Whether you organize a collection at your school, synagogue, workplace, or neighborhood, every can and box adds up to meals for families in need.

Focus on shelf-stable essentials like canned proteins, peanut butter, rice, beans, cereal, and household basics such as paper goods or toiletries.

3. Volunteer

Volunteers are the heartbeat of our Food Pantry.

You can sort donations, restock shelves, assist with distributions, or help clients shop with dignity in our market-style space.

Whether you come as an individual, family, or corporate group, your time directly supports our mission to ensure that no one in our community goes hungry.

Together, We Can Make a Difference

JFS Dallas has always been a place where people come for help—and where the community comes together to give it.

During this government shutdown, your compassion ensures that families can count on JFS Dallas to provide stability, care, and hope.

Because in times of uncertainty, our community steps up.
