Bringing Breast Cancer Screening Closer to Home at JFS Northpoint Health Center

For many women, getting a mammogram can come with barriers. The cost of a screening, finding a provider, and making another trip for an appointment can all make it more difficult to access this important care.

This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, JFS Dallas is highlighting a recent partnership that brought breast cancer screening directly to patients at JFS Northpoint Health Center.

On September 28, a Methodist Health System mobile mammography unit visited JFS Northpoint Health Center as part of JFS Dallas’ partnership with the American Cancer Society to help improve breast cancer screening rates. In just one day, 17 JFS Dallas patients received mammograms at the same health center where they already receive care.

For patients without insurance, financial assistance helped ensure cost did not stand in the way of receiving a screening. Support from Methodist Health System and the Jalonick Family Memorial Fund at The Dallas Foundation helped provide funding for mammograms for patients who may otherwise have faced financial barriers to care.

Making Preventive Care More Accessible

Mammograms play an important role in detecting breast cancer early, when treatment can be more effective. The American Cancer Society recommends annual screenings beginning at age 45, with the option to start at 40. At age 55, women can choose to continue annually or switch to every two years.

By bringing the mobile mammography unit directly to Northpoint, patients were able to receive their screening in a familiar setting connected to the care they already receive. The event is one example of how JFS Dallas works alongside community partners to make health care more accessible for the individuals and families we serve.

Our partnership with the American Cancer Society is helping JFS Dallas continue efforts to improve breast cancer screening rates and connect eligible patients with this important preventive care.

We are grateful to the American Cancer Society, Methodist Health System and the Jalonick Family Memorial Fund at The Dallas Foundation for helping make greater access to breast cancer screening possible for Northpoint patients.
