A Career Coach’s Guide to Using the Holidays to Plan Your Next Move (With Wellness in Mind)

The holidays are busy, emotional, and often exhausting. For many people, career planning gets pushed to the side with a promise to “think about it in January or even February.”

But here’s the thing: the holidays can actually be a great time to get clarity about your career—if you approach it gently.

Instead of pressure or big resolutions, think reflection, wellness, and small intentional steps.

So Slow Down Before You Speed Up

December typically and naturally brings a slower pace. Use that pace to check in with yourself on items such as:

  • What parts of work felt energizing this year if you currently have a job?
  • What drained you or affected your well-being if you have a job or not?
  • What do you want less of next year—and more of?

This isn’t about judging your choices. It’s about noticing patterns.

Burnout Isn’t Always a Career Problem

End-of-year fatigue is real, people—especially during the holidays. Feeling tired doesn’t always mean you need a new job; however, if you are looking for a job because you don’t have one, this can affect you as well.

Sit back and ask yourself:

  • Do I need rest, better boundaries, or a change in direction?
  • What would a healthier version of my work life look like?

Clarity comes when you separate stress from true misalignment.

Think Small and Sustainable

You don’t need a full plan right now. One or two small steps are enough. Some ideas are:

  • Jot down career priorities
  • Update your resume a little at a time
  • Research roles that align with your lifestyle and values
  • Plan support for the new year

Small, thoughtful steps protect your energy while still moving you forward.

A Calm Start to the New Year

When you use the holidays to reflect, January feels less frantic and more focused. You start the year grounded, clear, and already one step ahead.

Your career should support your life—not drain it. Planning your next move with wellness in mind helps you create something sustainable, not just impressive.

If you’re ready for clarity without burnout, working with a career coach during this season can help you move into the new year with confidence and balance. Contact Jewish Family Service’s Career and Financial Coaching department and I’ll be happy to help – 972-437-9950 x379.
