Special Needs Awareness Month

February is Special Needs Awareness Month! The Special Needs Partnership at Jewish Family Service works with many partners in the Dallas area to help provide an inclusive community for families with special needs. We are proud to share with you several events that will be taking place in the Dallas area during the month of February.

Shabbat Morning Service

February 3 | 9:30 AM | Congregation Beth Torah

Congregation Beth Torah invites the Dallas community to a Jewish Disabilities Awareness and Inclusion Month Shabbat Morning Service. At that service you will see participation by congregants and community guests, as well as hearing the D’Var Torah delivered by Sarah, Ira, and Jacob Korman. After services, all are invited to join at the Kiddush luncheon where you will have an opportunity to “schmooze” in a warm and welcoming environment.

Levine Academy Inclusion Experience

February 6 | Levine Academy | For students only

The 5th and 6th grade classes at Levine Academy will be participating in the Inclusion Experience, an interactive, multi-sensory program presenting insightful simulations of common disabilities.

Community Wide Inclusion Experience

February 11 | 12:00 PM | Congregation Shearith Israel

In honor of Special Needs Awareness Month, the JFS Special Needs Partnership is hosting a FREE community wide Inclusion Experience. The Inclusion Experience is a hands-on interactive, multi-sensory simulation designed for participants to experience how people of all of abilities learn. The program includes simulations of Speech, Vision, Hearing, Dyslexia, Fine Motor, Executive Function disabilities and more. It is our hope that after participating in our program, people will develop a greater sense of understanding and willingly include others who are different from them.

Raise Awareness for Special Needs

February 11 | 3:00 PM | Congregation Shearith Israel

Join Congregation Shearith Israel in partnership with Camp Young Judaea for an afternoon of inclusive activities in a welcoming environment. Open to individuals of all capabilities.

Special Rights Awareness Day

February 13-14 | 9:00 AM | Temple Emanu-El

For the second year, Temple Emanu-El will be hosting Special Rights Awareness Day on February 13 and 14. Programming has been expanded to two separate days so that children can engage in this experience on a deeper level. We will have five rooms setup, each focused on a different disability (speech, mobility, hearing, vision and fine motor). Children ages three and older will travel between these rooms and engage in experiences that will help them understand what it might be like to live with a disability.

Open to those enrolled in Temple Emanu-El ECEC only.

Movie: “Peter Rabbit”

February 17 | 11:00 AM | Studio Movie Grill

Every month, Studio Movie Grill hosts family-friendly movies are free for children with special needs and their siblings, with adult tickets available for before-noon price. These Special Needs Screenings are shown with the lights up and the volume lowered and children are free to move around, talk, or even dance in the aisles during the movie. Available at most locations.

Friendship Circle Junior Friends

Junior Friends is a new program from Friendship Circle of Dallas for younger children that allows children of all abilities to come together, because friends without differences grow best when they start young! Enjoy music, face painting, crafts, and more. For children through 7 years of age.
